Types and Shadows: Creation

In Colossians 1:13-17, I talked about the three parts in that passage during my message: Redemption, Transition, Creation. There is actually a chiastic structure in these verses. What's a chiastic structure? In simple terms, it is an A. B. C. B1. A1. construction. Think of it like a cheeseburger with two slices of cheese on both sides of the meat in the middle. You have the bread, the cheese, and in the center, the meat - the focus of the cheeseburger. The writers of the Bible often employed chiastic structures in their writing. In fact, the whole Bible is a chiastic structure: Creation, Old Covenant, Christ, New Covenant, New Creation. The "Transition" that I mentioned briefly in my message is actually the meat of the chiastic structure in this text: "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation" (v. 15). Christ is the center piece of both redemption and creation. Christ is the "Transition" between the "Redemption" and the "Creation" verses in our text.
